Tucked into Melcom Mall on Spintex, Hallab Gourmet 1881 brings a welcome burst of Levantine sunshine. Located in the sparkling Melcome Mall, this bright, airy, inviting space with a polished, café-style finish. Starters include staples, such as hummus, baba ganoush and labneh before moving on to shawarma, grills, hot and cold mezza, mansaf and chicken musakhan. Grilled platters include kafta, tawouk, lamb skewer and a mixed beef and lamb option. There’s even mansaf, the Jordanian rice-and-yoghurt classic, alongside soups, salads and wraps.
What makes Hallab stand out, though, is the Dish of the Day, perhaps a warming plate of fish sayadieh – off-menu, but always worth asking about. A glass-fronted display case shows off glossy slices of kunafa, pistachio-stuffed baklava and rows of honey-soaked bites that are hard to resist. If in doubt, order a mixed plate and settle in with a coffee… and a smile.
